FS-080  Langanes

Langanes is a veritable outdoor paradise teeming with birdlife, great for nature study and hiking as well as some tangible history. A trip to the outlying peninsula is an unforgettable adventure. Langanes peninsula stretches nearly 40 km north east into the ocean, ending in the narrow point Fontur. Until the mid 20th century nearly all of Langanes was inhabited.

The hike is through peaceful and quiet area with great stories from previous time. The route is along coastal line, partly with vivid bird cliffs, and to the point of Langanes peninsula. One overnight is in guesthouse Ytra Lón and two nights are in tents (at same place). Luggage is transported by car so you only need to carry day backpack. No rivers to across.

Day 1: Hike nearby Ytra Lón, a circle where you have look at the area and get insight in circumstances, culture and history. Walk distance about 14 km. Dinner and overnight at Ytra Lón.

Day 2: Short drive from Ytra Lón to Mt. Heiðarfjall where hike start and ahead is route along the cliffs to Skálar. Walking distances about 13 km.  Overnight in tents, for two nights.

Day 3: From Skálar to Fontur, and back at the other side of the peninsula. At Fontur is chance to lie down and carefully look down the cliffs and get excellent close views to the birds. As well as see line of shoreline as far as possible on both hands.  Walk distance about 24 km - flat land.

Day 4: From Skálar is walk across the peninsula to Skoruvíkurbjarg which is one of the very best sites in Iceland to see auks at close range, including the scarce Brünnich's Guillemot. There is also nice colony of Northern Gannets on a large rock out at the sea. From Skoruvíkurbjarg is transfer to Ytra Lón.

The tour can be combined with another travel plan or an individual extension to see more of the region / country.
