Guided hiking – day tour

Jökulsárgljúfur is an ideal area for hikes and outdoor recreation. Exploring then canyon on foot is the best way to enjoy fully the richness and diverse character of the area.

Dettifoss – Hafragilsundirlendi – Þórunnarfjöll – Hólmatungur – Kallbjarg – Karl og Kerling - Vesturdalur

 

Points of interest: Most spectacular hike in the Jökulsárgljúfur area. The canyon, the river, springs and waterfalls.

Hiking distance:19-20,5 km. **  (estim. 9 hrs.)

Start/Departure: 9:00 by Gljúfrastofa (visitor centre) in Ásbyrgi  – from there a transportation to Dettifoss where the hike start. From Vesturdalur a transportation to Ásbyrgi.

Price pr person: 115 €

Booking in advance

Included: Guiding services. Transportation from Gljúfrastofa (Ásbyrgi) to Dettifoss and after the hike from Vesturdalur to Ásbyrgi.  

Other: No meals included, people are asked to bring their own lunch package.

Difficulty factor: Difficult / Challenging *

* Hike down to Hafragil lowland have to take special care as this is the most difficult hiking trail in Jökulsárgljúfur and not suitable for untrained hikers or people afraid of heights. At the same time, this is the most magnificent hiking area. This part is rated as “Difficult” meanwhile the other part of the trail is “Challenging”. For those who are not interested to hike Hafragil lowland, we have another option but we need then to know when the tour is booked.

** The shorter distance is by going Hafragil lowland.
