FS-076 Mývatn - Krafla - Gjástykki
On day one we start the hike from Mývatn area and walk along Dalfjall up to Leirhnjúkur.
On day two we keep on, follow the „roots“ of last eruptions (1975-1984), along Leirhnjúkshraun (lava field) to Gjástykki.
Created by a rift, Gjástykki is a valley between Krafla and Kelduhverfi. The valley is part of the same volcanic zone as Krafla. The interesting feature about Gjástykki is that it reflects the movement characteristic of plate tectonics and generally referred to as divergent boundaries, accompanied by volcanic activity and rift formation, resulting in lava fields and cliffs, some of which measure dozens of metres in height.
In this tour, we explore only small part of the area (Gjástykki) but will though see magnificient places.
We do recommend to plan this as 3 days and accross Gjástykki area on the last day.
