FS-069 Geological sites; Askja -Suðurárbotnar
Dyngjufjöll mountain range is situated to the north of its glacier namesake, which also constitutes the northernmost extension of the largest glacier in the country, Vatnajökull. These mountains encircle the 50 km2 Askja caldera. The hikers start from this highland site and proceed to the lowlands.
Itinerary
The tour starts from Mývatn area as we drive to the inland, to Herðubreiðarlindir, for short stop, and then to Drekagil near Askja. Plan for the day is to walk from Drekagil over Dyngjufjöll to the caldera (Askja). From the edge of the mountains around the caldera is fabulous view. After enjoying Askja area, included visit to Víti (crater which is a unique nature bath place), we walk inside the caldera to parking area and can have short drive to Drekagil (or walk).
The hike of the second day starts from the parking place in Askja. From there we head over rough lava field to mountains around the caldera (Askja), through pass called Jónsskarð. From there is great view around, Askja, Vatnajökull, Kverkfjöll etc. The day end in Dyngjufjalladalur. Hiking distance approx. 19-20 km.
From Dyngjufjalladalur we head north to Suðurárbotnar, wellsprings where meets contrast between much of water flowing out from the highland desert. The circumstance here gives marvelous chance for quietness and for sure unique experience. Hiking distance approx. 20-22 km.
The last day, we walk from Botni, following the river Suðurá, to Svartárkot which is a farm in Bárðardalur. Hiking distance approx. 15-16 km. From Svartárkot we drive to Mývatn area where we started this travel.
