FS-067 Mývatn – Jökulsárgljúfur
The Mývatn area and the canyon of Jökulsá á Fjöllum are two of the best known natural attractions in Iceland. This guided tour, will introduce tour members to gems of nature and inimitable rock and cliff formations, occasionally interspersed with lovely vistas of green birch, often in the most unexpected and craggy places.
Itinerary
The tour starts from Mývatnsstofa (Mývatn Information centre) in the morning. This first day we take good walk from the lake (Mývatn) up to Leirhnjúkur (Krafla). From there is drive to Mývatn Nature baths and a camping site next to the lake.
On day two, we start to walk from Víti (Krafla) and head to north along with lava fields from last eruptions (1975-1984). The scenery is spectacular! Near Gjástykkisbunga are clear and interesting result of these eruptions, land formation, forms and colors.
On third day, we head to Jökulsá á Fjöllum (river from a glacier) which comes from north side of the glacier Vatnajökull. We arrive to the river just above the edge of the highland, and we follow the river where rapids and waterfalls have formed and made fantastic setting. First Selfoss, then Dettifoss. Despite obvious tremendous of the canyon, and power in the waterfalls, is the area full of incredible natural treasurer and forms, big and small. Here is relentless land formation, and contrast between the small and the big will be like magnet for the sense in nice walk around Dettifoss area. Here we are into the north area of Vatnajokull national park.
On day four, we follow tha canyon(s) from Dettifoss, where it (they) is most awesome and impressive. Almost each step bring us new scenery or story. Hólmatungur is a great area, the landscape majestic, varied vegetation (having in mind coming from the inland), peaceful and lot to see. Singing clear streams comes to dirty water in the glacier river which break here through narrow channel. A sympony from the nature. Before leaving Hólmatungur, we will wade over Stallá but this clear river is the only watercourse we need to across in this tour. In earlier time was a farm in Svínadalur and here are stories and historical places. This day end in Vesturdalur but there is one of service centre for the national park.
Hljóðaklettar are group of basaltic columns which create all kinds of patterns and forms. This area is very interesting and we walk through it up to Rauðhólar and from there to end of Ásbyrgi. From the cliffs is good time to see the area of Ásbyrgi which is magnificent. There are more than one available explaination or stories how Ásbyrgi was created. From here we follow the cliffs of Ásbyrgi to Gljúfrastofa which is a visitor centre for the national park. After visiting there we drive to the inner end of Ásbyrgi for looking arround before heading to Mývatn area and end the tour.
